As part of the 6th Form Curriculum we buy in additional sessions at Capel Manor College near Enfield. This is a well known centre providing a wide range of horticulture, veterinary, and land based courses from taster days for secondary schools to advanced studies and degrees. The college have worked hard to put together a wide range of activities and learning for our students, whatever their ability.
The students attend for 10 weeks per year throughout their three years in 6th Form and we try to ensure that their sessions take place in different terms each year allowing them to experience all seasons.
The college is large and has a huge variety of equipment and environments. We have a dedicated allotment site and produce planted by one group is harvested by the next. The students get opportunities to work with small animals as well as visiting the farm to see lambing and sheep-shearing.
Students build a knowledge of horticulture skills such as weeding, potting on, preparing hanging baskets and floral displays. They learn how to handle and use equipment and about personal safety. They bring these skills back to our Gardening Project.
The college is open to the public and students have an opportunity to use the canteen there, practicing appropriate behaviour in a public place as well as understanding and using money.
All of these opportunities are so valuable to our students and we feel Capel Manor is an important enrichment of our curriculum.
